Welcome to Year One

Learning Challenge: Dinosaur Planet!
Phonics is a big part of Year 1. The children will do 40 minutes of phonics learning each day, which involves speed reading, spelling and story book sessions. They will learn red words (tricky words) and how to sound out (segment) and blend, to aid them with their reading and writing.
How can you help your child at home?
Please practice your child’s sounds and spellings as they come home. Letters and sounds are everywhere! Encourage your child to spot letters and words whilst out and about e.g. road signs, number plates, food packaging, adverts etc...
Phonics screening takes place in June for all Year 1 children. A phonics meeting will be held nearer the time. Please check our class page and newsletter for updates.
In Year 1 children are introduced to our new maths scheme Maths No Problem. Maths No Problem is a whole-class mastery programme designed to help nurture confidence in maths.
In chapter 1, pupils are exploring numbers to 10. They will be counting using one-to-one correspondence and using ten frames to represent numbers. They will then be writing numbers using both numerals and words. Pupils are introduced to the concept of 0 by counting backwards from numbers below 10. To complete the learning in the unit, pupils will be comparing numbers using the terms greater than, less than and as many as. Pupils explore which numbers are greatest and smallest in a series, and order numbers to show value. In the final lesson, pupils are showing 1 more and 1 less using concrete materials
